Homework Policy

Picture
Students will be responsible for completing homework in a timely manner. Parents should note excuses.
View Ho'okele’s homework policy at  http://hookele.hidoe.us/homework-policy.html

*Every morning students will turn in their homework assignments. Assignments should be Priority to help strengthen academic skills.

Written Legibly
Completed with QUALITY & EFFORT
Completely Finished

A message will be sent to parents through Seesaw when assignments don’t meet expectations. Unacceptable/incomplete/or Missing assignments will be made up during 1st recess and/or at home. Students will have the weekend to complete and turn in all missing work on MONDAY

Students with 3 or more consistent missing/incomplete/incorrect homework assignments will receive a call home. Student will also need to write a composition to explain why assignments are not being completed and what will be done next time to ensure future assignments are being completed in a timely manner.

If your child continues to have missing, incomplete, or unacceptable work being turned in, I may schedule a virtual conference with you to see what we can do to help your child be successful.

AVID Student Binder & Planner

The AVID Binder is used to organize your child's homework, planner, and assignments in the various core subjects. Your child will bring the binder home and return to school daily. Please encourage your child to keep their binders neat and organized every quarter. They are taught how to arrange their binders in class.

The planner should be where students refer to for homework and where parents sign daily to acknowledge completed assignments. The daily homework assignments will be posted online, but are subject to change. Homework should take approximately 90 minutes every evening to complete (unless there is unfinished work from class which may take longer). Parents are encouraged to discuss homework assignments with their child as this will foster a deeper understanding of the material.

Example of Daily Homework *Subject to change
Independent Reading (30 minutes)
Math (Ready Math) (20 minutes)
ELA (Vocab/Grammar/Spelling/Rdg) (20 minutes)
Social Studies/Science (20 minutes)

Note: Time spent on homework will fluctuate due to child’s individual differences

Here are some tips for helping your child with homework:
  • Have a weekly meeting with your child to plan out homework. I will update the students “homework” page weekly. Please use this as a guide to keep up with tests and projects. Use your child's AVID Student Planner to set a schedule for the week.
  • Set a timer for your child; have him/her estimate how long each assignment will take and set the timer for that amount of time. Timing each assignment helps to keep the child on task.
  • If homework is taking more than 1 1/2 hours per night, please let me know and we will figure out what exactly is the problem and how we can come up with a solution.
Let's work together to help your child succeed:
  • Review child’s homework and ensure it is completed and sign planner daily.
  • Ensure your child has given you any forms, flyers, or communication notes from school/teacher.
  • Set aside a quiet, properly lit place for homework to be done. Provide necessary materials for child to do homework (pencils, ruler, etc.).
  • Establish a daily routine that includes homework time.
  • Guide and encourage child to do best in homework, but do not do the work for the child.
  • Support child and communicate concerns with the teacher.
  • Talk with child and discuss what he/she is learning or trying to learn.
